Twenty Years at Arm: Tamas Fulop's Career Growth

Who are you and what is your role at Arm?

I'm Tamas Fulop, the Director of Applications Engineering at Arm. In this role, I lead a team of 10 people responsible for supporting products that cater to the infrastructure market, focusing on servers, cloud computing, and high-performance computing.

My journey at Arm spans 20 years. I initially joined as an applications engineer, later transitioning to a verification engineer role. My career trajectory involved horizontal moves across various areas within the company, including IoT and support for products in the infrastructure space. Over time, my responsibilities grew, leading to me becoming a line manager and ultimately assuming a director position.

How does Arm support its employees' development and learning?

Arm places a strong emphasis on continuous learning and development. I've benefited from organized training sessions and had excellent mentors who guided me through my career. The company encourages trying different roles and provides flexibility for employees to explore new areas. I think that this focus on individual growth contributes to the overall success of the company.

"What I like about Arm is the supportive environment for career growth, which allowed me to diversify my knowledge and take on many different challenges throughout my career so far"

What is the culture like at the Budapest office, and how has it evolved over time?

The Budapest office has seen significant growth, expanding from 30 engineers to around 150 today.

"I would define our office culture as one that is people-friendly and fosters diversity, with leadership being very supportive. We have a diverse team, working on varied projects, creating a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere"

How has the concept of hybrid work evolved at Arm, and how does it impact your work?

Hybrid work at Arm was already in place before the pandemic, providing flexibility in choosing where to work. The company's proactive approach and early adoption of hybrid work allowed us to adapt seamlessly when the pandemic hit. This flexibility has been crucial, especially during unpredictable times, and has personally allowed me to balance work and family responsibilities. I have two young children and this flexibility has really helped me in building a strong connection with them from an early age.

Are there any team community activities at the Budapest office?

Certainly! One standout aspect of Arm is the sense of community. Arm prioritizes community building through initiatives like Team Arm, which focuses on engaging with local communities. Additionally, the company values volunteering and actively supports NGOs. Success at Arm is not only about technical prowess but also about fostering a collaborative and supportive community.

We actively participate in supporting disadvantaged children through a mentoring program. This involves volunteering our time to mentor children from financially underprivileged backgrounds, providing them guidance and support. These community-focused activities contribute to a sense of purpose and fulfillment outside of our regular work.

How do you envision the future of your role at Arm?

Having recently changed roles, I'm focused on maintaining team cohesion and building a strong community within the Budapest team. Looking ahead, I see two potential paths: either returning to a more technical role in engineering or further expanding my role in management. As I weight these options, my priority is maintaining a healthy work-life balance, especially as my kids are growing up. Currently, I find fulfillment in strategizing and overseeing the support for Arm’s infrastructure products.
