Joining Arm Chandler: Wesley Wu’s Intern Story

As a college student, why did you choose to join Arm?

As someone who was deeply interested in computers, phones, and all things tech, I think I was eventually going to find out about Arm one way or another. I guess I really discovered Arm when I started learning more about how computers work on a deeper level, which was probably when I started my computer engineering degree in college.

I chose to join Arm because contributing to any computer/mobile computing hardware has always been a dream of mine, and finally getting the opportunity to achieve that at Arm really excited me. And so, it made it better when Arm was the first semiconductor company to offer me a hardware intern role for the summer.

What made Arm stand out to you?

From my interviews, I got the impression that Arm would have a very collaborative work culture, and I was not disappointed, to say the least. Arm supports me well at work and my buddy has been super helpful throughout the time I've been here.

During the presentations on my project's progress, my other colleagues in the lab also provide great feedback on how I can improve my software.

Arm is a cool company to work for!

How does it feel to contribute to the development of such cutting-edge technology?

I work in the (relatively) new lab at Chandler, and in a typical day, I'm working on writing code to remotely control a thermal testing device. Every day, the first thing I do when I get to the office is turn on the device, and, to extend its lifespan, I make sure to turn it off once I leave the office.

It feels good to be able to contribute to Arm's innovation. It's very gratifying to think about the fact that I'm basically working on developing infrastructure that the lab will use for many years to come after I finish my internship, since it's always a goal of mine to make things that other people will use regardless of the actual scope of the job.

What is it like living and working in Chandler?

In Chandler there are activities like pickleball, bowling, and mini golf; there's also the Chandler Fashion Center which has a variety of different stores, even including a movie theatre and escape room. for our internship closing event we went to Andretti's indoor karting and games which not only has go-karting, but there's also laser tag, bowling, and a big arcade there. there's also a lot of good food around the area - there's a plaza right across the street from the office as well as a plaza a few blocks down the street from the office which has many food options, especially Mexican and Asian cuisines.

Chandler is right next to Phoenix which has hiking and biking trails, such as Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak. I hear about people kayaking and paddleboarding at nearby lakes like Lake Pleasant and Saguaro Lake. Phoenix has a diverse cultural scene, with a mix of various art, music, and cuisine from different backgrounds. I can explore museums like the Heard Museum, which celebrates Native American culture, and the Phoenix Art Museum.

I love playing table tennis, so I really appreciate the fact that there are two table tennis tables at the Chandler office. I also really like the silent booths for making phone calls since they really do a good job of blocking out external sound and give an authentic feel of privacy. I also really like how easy it is to reserve a break room even on-the-fly. Arm Chandler is an easy-going office.

Overall, why do you think Arm is a great fit for you?

I think Arm is a great fit for me because it’s a hardware-focused company, so there are many opportunities for me to use the hardware skills I've learned to solve real-world problems.
