Shaping the World with Arm GPU: Qin Liu's Learning and Development Journey

Who Are You and What Do You Do at Arm?

I'm Qin Liu, currently serving as a GPU hardware project manager at Arm. My journey with Arm began in 2012 as a fresh graduate engineer. Since then, I've had the privilege of working extensively within the GPU function, witnessing its growth and transformation. From starting as a verification engineer to stepping into project management, my experiences at Arm have been nothing short of inspiring.

Tell us about your career progression at Arm, from a graduate engineer to a project manager?

I joined Arm as a graduate engineer, and my first role was as a verification engineer. I spent a couple of years focusing on block level verification before getting the opportunity to lead verification on some projects. It was an exciting challenge that allowed me to grow my skills and confidence.

In 2018, I felt the urge to explore a different aspect of engineering, and project delivery intrigued me. This led me to make a conscious decision to switch to project management. The transition was both challenging and fulfilling, and I'm grateful for the support and encouragement I received from my colleagues and mentors at Arm during this transformation.

Arm is known for its cutting-edge technology. How does it feel to contribute to the development of such advanced GPUs?

Contributing to Arm's cutting-edge technology is an exhilarating experience. I still vividly remember my job interview in 2012, when the interviewer proudly showcased a Samsung Galaxy S2, powered by an Arm Mali GPU designed by his team. It was a moment of realization that the work we do here has a profound impact on the technology that people use daily.

Today, knowing that there are over 8 billion Arm Mali GPUs shipped to date is a testament to the collective effort of our team. Being part of that development, whether as an engineer or a project manager, fills me with immense pride.

"It's incredibly rewarding to see how our innovations shape the world"

How has Arm provided you with opportunities for professional growth and development?

Arm's commitment to fostering employee growth is truly commendable. I've been fortunate to have fantastic support throughout my journey. From line managers to mentors and buddies, everyone plays a crucial role in nurturing talent and helping us thrive in our respective roles.

Arm provides a clear path for career growth, which has been invaluable in guiding my progression. I also had the chance to participate in the Project Manager Secondment program in 2017, which allowed me to gain first-hand experience in project management before making the switch permanently. These opportunities have been pivotal in shaping my career and broadening my skill set.

Can you describe the culture within the GPU group at Arm? How does cooperation play a role in the team's success?

The culture within the GPU group is incredible, and cooperation lies at its core. Working on GPU projects is a complex endeavor, involving multiple teams from hardware and software to modelling and performance analysis—all working together to achieve a common goal.

Embracing diverse perspectives and backgrounds has enriched my learning journey, and I discover something new every day when collaborating with my colleagues. The team spirit and camaraderie have been instrumental in driving our projects forward. We have numerous activities, such as trainings, workshops, and social events, that further strengthen our bond as a team.

Final Thoughts

"My time at Arm has been an incredible adventure, filled with opportunities to innovate and make a real impact on the world of technology"

From my beginnings as a graduate engineer to my current role as a project manager, Arm's culture of support and cooperation has nurtured my growth and inspired me to fully embrace innovation. I hope that sharing my experiences will encourage others to join our talented GPU department and become part of the remarkable journey of technological advancement at Arm.
