Staff Firmware Engineer - Memory Subsystem Lead

Arm has built the world’s most pervasive compute architecture, powering computing wherever it happens – from embedded and automotive systems to cloud and data center infrastructure. As Arm continues to grow its presence in server and infrastructure markets, system software plays a critical role in enabling high-quality, production-ready platforms for customers and partners.

This role sits within Arm’s System Solutions software organization, working on software for Arm Neoverse–based platforms, from early bring-up and validation on pre-silicon platforms through to production-quality firmware on real silicon, while providing technical and people leadership in a focus group responsible for memory subsystem enablement, platform bring-up, system configuration, performance, and firmware quality.

We are looking for an experienced Staff Firmware Engineer with strong low-level software expertise and leadership capability to lead firmware development for the memory subsystem across next-generation infrastructure platforms. This role requires deep technical judgment, strong cross-team collaboration, and the ability to guide a small team through complex hardware/software integration challenges from early models through silicon bring-up and production readiness.

Job purpose and accountabilities

Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical delivery (development, integration and validation) of the memory subsystem focus area across pre-silicon platforms and silicon bring-up environments, ensuring robust operation across development and production milestones.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, validation, platform firmware and system architecture, teams to ensure coherent memory subsystem bring-up and integration across the wider platform.
  • Debug complex system-level issues across hardware/software boundaries, using strong understanding of firmware flows, platform configuration, memory behavior, and system interactions.
  • Optimize memory subsystem behavior for correctness, performance, latency, bandwidth, reliability, and power efficiency, making clear trade-offs based on platform goals and customer needs.
  • Remain technically engaged by reviewing designs, implementation plans, validation results, and critical code, while contributing hands-on when needed to guide or unblock delivery.
  • Line manage 3-5 engineers, including goal setting, coaching, feedback, performance evaluation, and development of technical capability within the team.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across teams in the memory subsystem domain, helping establish good engineering practices, documentation, debug discipline, and long-term software quality.

Required Skills and Experience :

  • Solid industry experience building complex firmware or low-level system software, combined with demonstrated leadership or mentoring and a strong track record of delivery.
  • Background in firmware development on pre-silicon and silicon platforms, preferably on Arm-based systems, demonstrated through ownership, review, and guidance of complex technical designs.
  • Extensive knowledge of enabling the memory subsystem in system software, including areas such as memory initialization, platform configuration, controller/PHY interaction, training flows, error handling, performance tuning, or bring-up debug.
  • Sound technical judgment, including assessing trade-offs, managing technical risk and debugging ambiguous system-level failures
  • Experience working at the intersection of hardware and software, showing capacity to work effectively with hardware build, validation, system architecture, platform firmware, and QA teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a history of effective collaboration across teams and sites. Able to explain complex memory subsystem issues clearly to both specialists and broader platform collaborators.

“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience :

  • Experience working on server or infrastructure platforms, including customer- or production-facing environments.
  • Understanding of system architecture, preferably Arm, including boot flows, firmware interfaces, OS fundamentals, device drivers, and platform configuration.
  • Experience with DDR, LPDDR, memory controllers, PHY initialization, ECC, RAS, memory performance analysis, or board/silicon bring-up.
  • Understanding of software development standard processes, including testing strategies, CI, validation planning, release readiness, and defect triage.
  • Experience working in globally distributed teams.

In Return:

You will have the opportunity to lead critical firmware work for the memory subsystem on groundbreaking infrastructure technology, with scope to influence technical direction, platform bring-up, performance, delivery outcomes, and team culture within a highly skilled global engineering organization!
