Job Description

Arm’s foundational technology is defining the future of computing. A future built by the greatest ecosystem in the world. A future built on Arm.

Teaching academics, learners, researchers and related developers are naturally attracted to working with the Arm ecosystem to increase their impact. Arm’s university education and research programs support them, helping encourage organic communities of practice to develop and thrive. In so doing, we seek to address potential gaps in skills and knowledge for those in education/research or the early stages of their careers. Increasingly, we achieve this at scale by catalysing partners but also continue to build and maintain a product and service roadmap of our own that can help seed the communities. We are now seeking a Development Engineer with expertise in SoC design to help drive these initiatives as part of a diverse team.

Job Description:

Do you have a strong technical background in VLSI design and SoC development? In this role, you can tackle exciting engineering challenges as well as take on more product and community management responsibilities over time, as the scale of your influence and impact grows. As product management is an acknowledged career path inside Arm and its ecosystem, this could open up a myriad of career possibilities, including ascending the grade structure internally or making a diagonal move outside.

The primary job location will be in our amazing Cambridge office with part-time secondment/placement opportunities into academia a possibility.

Responsibilities:

Working with internal technical colleagues, program managers and academic partners to identify needs for off-the-shelf and custom-built reference designs, flows, tools, and software stacks in SoC design research (for FPGAs and ASICs) and help develop product roadmaps to meet these needs
Similarly, identifying needs for educational content in the Computer Engineering (CE) and Electronics Engineering (EE) curriculum, and contribute to building, curating and maintaining such resources including with external academic partners

Part-owning the development of education and research communities of practice, using industry-proven processor/system IPs and tools from Arm and partners
Staying on top of the latest developments in CE and EE research and development, trends and practices

Required Skills and Experience :

  • Drive and determination, self-motivation to tackle problems and push projects forward without prescriptive instruction, yet a consultative approach on the big-picture direction
  • PhD-level expertise in SoC design and VLSI design (for ASICs and FPGAs)
  • Knowledge of and experience in using EDA tools, SoC design services and SoC programming
  • Knowledge of established teaching and learning approaches in Computer and Electronics Engineering
  • Experience in working in or with academia to achieve tangible education and research outcomes
  • Ability to reflect user and partner requirements effectively to an internal company audience
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – able to convey technical material to a non-technical audience
  • Commercial awareness and the interest to learn more
  • Everyday business skills such as project management, negotiation, and situational awareness
  • Team orientation but the ability to work independently while understanding and performing the role in the context of the wider team and international organisation

“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience :

  • Product management experience related to SoC development
  • Research experience in Arm-based SoC design, implementation, and programming
  • Experience with Verilog / System Verilog Hardware Description Language design
  • Xilinx FPGA design tools experience
  • Python scripting experience
  • Experience in test chip development (design, verification, synthesis, P&R, bring-up, testing)
