Weighing up your options with Poonam
Wondering if an internship or graduate programme at Arm is for you? You may not want to be a software or hardware engineer, but there are all kinds of careers here for people who are passionate about technology. Poonam took her time on her graduate scheme before finding the right fit as a project manager in our global infrastructure and platforms team: “At first, I didn't think I’d fit in at Arm because I thought it was too technical a company. It was only after speaking to Arm colleagues at a careers event that I was sold. It turns out this job is as much about people skills. You don't need to know all about the technical aspects, you’ll pick that up as you go.”
At Arm, choosing your path is a personal process with plenty of support thrown in. As Poonam knows from experience, it’s crucial you choose a program where your employer is patient and gives you a wide variety of opportunities to experiment: “In this industry, there’s this pressure to just find a scheme and get your foot into the door. When actually, it’s absolutely fine if you don't know what you want to do. To this day, neither do I and lots of other people. So the rotations on my programme really helped me. I learned so many different skillsets in a diverse range of fields. I worked in our security team to helping launch our new HQ building in Cambridge… all sorts! At Arm, there’s time to root out your strengths and weaknesses.”
“I’ve built an incredibly diverse and useful network.”
Our technology, and which role you play in bringing it to life, isn’t the only way to make an impact. Poonam is a huge believer in the positivity you can spread in the world when working for a caring organisation like Arm: “I'm not the typical IT graduate and I think my bubbly, people centric personality gives me the edge. I like to engage in conversation with diverse range of people and understand different cultures. So I joined Team Arm and its champion community, which introduces people in the business to volunteering, social outreach and fundraising. I’ve helped run events for World Hunger Day, Movember and the Global Goals initiative, which is the UN’s targets for achieving sustainability worldwide. I also like to help educate new joiners, internally and externally, on what Arm does and how our tech will benefit the planet. I’ve even been lucky enough to have travelled to our Bangalore office in India in the process, building an incredibly diverse and useful network.”
